Pool Chemistry Green Water Probable cause: At some point, chlorine levels have fallen, allowing algae growth in the water. Remedy: First, test the water. Ensure that the chlorine levels are back to normal, as well as your pH and Alkalinity levels. Algae is unable to grow in perfectly balanced water. However, just because the water is balanced does not mean the algae will go away. When algae dies, it stops sticking to the liner, but can stay on the liner or in the water and resemble a fine powder. This needs to be filtered out, swept up, or vacuumed out as soon as possible to remedy the situation. Cloudy Water Probable Cause One: When pH or Alkalinity levels become unbalanced it can cause the water to become a hazy white color. Remedy: Correcting the pH or Alkalinity imbalance is just a matter of adding the proper chemcials. If chemistry is the cause of the cloudy water, with proper filtration it should clear up within a few days. Probable Cause Two: Poor Filtration Remedy: If you have a sand filter, be certain that you are backwashing regularly. If you are backwashing normally and it's not fixing the problem, ensure that your sand is no older than five years. If you have a filter other than sand, contact us for advice tailored to your situation. Scale Buildup Probable Cause: Existing calcium in your source water. Remedy: Scale buildup can be removed by adding a Stain and Scale Control if the problem is minor. If you're having a major scale problem, a heavier duty remover may be required.
